Malabar Pied Hornbill

The Malabar pied hornbill has a captivating appearance with a large yellow and black bill. The primary colours of the body of this bird is also yellow and black. At 65 cm in length, this bird is one of the most popular types of hornbills in Sri Lanka and it is regarded as one of the larger birds. Evergreen forests as well as deciduous forests are known to provide a suitable habitat for the Malabar pied hornbills.

The scientific name of this bird is Anthracoceros coronatus and it belongs to the family of Bucerotidae birds. It is found in South Asia and when considering Sri Lanka, it is prominently found in the Udawalawe National Park. Visitors to the park can easily observe this unique and charming bird. The IUCN has listed this bird as not threatened species but deforestation poses threats to its population.
