Giant Gourami 1024x768

One of the significant sources of fish food, the giant gourami is grown for commercial uses in many nations. These fish are also used for aquariums as well as for controlling water weeds. The scientific name of the giant gourami fish is “Osphronemus goramy”. Rivers, lakes, and swamps that are slow-moving are the types of water bodies in which the giant gourami thrives. It can inhabit both freshwater and brackish water bodies. Due to its ability to breath in damp air, it is able to survive out of water for a considerably longer period of time as opposed to other similar fish.

The giant gourami, as its name dictates, is one of the larger types of gourami fish and it even reaches 70 cm. However, the giant gourami of Sri Lanka are much smaller and these are found in many water bodies of the country. Nests are built by these fish and they are found in several regions of Asia. Algae-based foods are preferred by this fish but it will intake several other types of foods such as shrimps or legumes. Additionally, the giant gourami are known to live on weed and could be a threat to other fish in scenarios where they are introduced by man.
