Rohu

The Rohu is a large fish that belongs to the family of carps and it is found in several freshwater bodies of Sir Lanka. The scientific name of these fish is “Labeo rohita” and due to its strong similarities between other members of the carp family, it is often confused. Aquaculture heavily uses the rohu and it is said that these fish can even reach lengths of 6 feet and weight 100 kilograms. However, most of these fish are smaller in size. The colour of these fish is usually grey, black, and white.

According to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the United Nations, the rohu has a body that is classified as bilaterally symmetrical and moderately elongate. The head of this fish does not have any scales but the rest of the body is scaled. South Asian nations, with the possible exception of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, produce rohu and in addition to this, certain countries of Southeast Asia also engage in cultivating these fish species.
