Arjun Tree(Kumbuk)

Known as the "arjun tree" in English, Terminalia arjuna is one of the species of plants found at Udawalawe. This particular tree is referred to as “kumbuk” in Sri Lanka and it has been identified along rivers in the park. This tree belongs to the family of Combretaceae and it usually reaches heights of 70 feet. The leaves of the tree are oblong and conical while the colour of the leaves is a combination of green and brown. The bark is grey in colour while the fruit of the tree grows towards the end of the year. This tree is not only found in Sri Lanka but also in certain parts of India, including south India. The tree is referred to as "marudha maram" in Tamil and as "thella maddi" in Telugu.
