Guinea Grass

Guinea grass, also known as green panic grass, has been assigned the scientific name Panicum maximum, similar to Megathyrsus maximus. This plant is found in the Udawalawe National Park even though it is native to Africa and certain parts of Middle East. It was introduced to Udawalawe and certain parts of Sri Lanka and it is regarded as an invasive weed in the island.

The plant grows usually in open grasslands and nearby trees. It is extremely durable as it is said to withstand drought and even wildlife. Guinea grass is an important source of food for elephants. Reaching even heights of over 3 metres or over 10 feet, guinea grass is a large species of perennial bunch grass.
